When managers are focused on their employees’ career development and advancement, great things happen. For physical therapists at our Tempe location, they’re lucky to call Carlos Rivas their boss. Because of his work managing employees and helping them reach goals and gain new skills, he has been named the April Physical Therapist (PT) of the Month. Let’s get to know Carlos.
A Phoenix native, Carlos graduated from NAU’s physical therapy program in 2010. In 2012, he joined Foothills where he wears many hats, including operating as an owner, director, and physical therapist. We are lucky to have Carlos as he almost choose a different career path.
“I originally chose physics and mechanical engineering as my major … Once I had the opportunity to work in a clinic, I knew this was the career for me,” says Carlos.
After talking to Carlos, it’s clear his focus is on his people. “Being able to come into the Tempe clinic and seeing everyone excited and having a good time makes the days so much better. We have a great team and positive energy which plays a big part in patient care,” says Carlos.
That energy is felt by his staff, as well. The employee that nominated Carlos describes him as being “known for growing and developing PT’s. Many [of his] PT’s move on to leadership and director roles.” When I asked him to talk more about this, it was clear that this is where his passion lies.
“I try and help develop everyone who works in my office,” Carlos says. “I do what I can to teach not only the clinical part but also the business component. I want the techs to come back and be a part of Foothills [as a PT]. I also want to try to help the PT’s reach their goals and potentially be a part of something bigger within Foothills,” he says.
If you’re considering a career as a physical therapist, Carlos offers this advice: “Get experience and understand the reality of the career. There are too many students who are interested in this career that have a certain expectation, which is not always accurate and sometimes can be misleading. With that being said, there are a lot of pathways within the physical therapy field that one can choose from which is great.”
Carlos also has plans for his own career. In 5 to 10 years, he would like to continue growing as a clinician and open another clinic and continue to play a vital role for Foothills.
When he’s not in the office, you can find Carlos eating at his favorite restaurant, Pomo, or enjoying his two dogs — Leo and Messi —, who he says “are like kids but much better.” No surprise here; the person, alive or dead, he would most want to meet: Lionel Messi. His favorite movie is Nacho Libre and he’s the guy to talk to if you’re dying to talk to someone about Game of Thrones (it’s his favorite show).
As far as personal goals? He’s a self-proclaimed “car guy,” and would love to one day purchase his dream car, “which will be either an Audi RS7 or Nissan GTR … maybe both.”
Congrats to our April Physical Therapist of the Month, Carlos! Thank you for all that you do. It’s managers like Carlos that make Foothills Sports Medicine an environment where employees to flourish and clients have a great experience. If you visit our Tempe location, say hi to Carlos! Of course, if the Tempe location isn’t convenient, we have locations throughout the Valley.
