Each month Foothills Sport Medicine Physical Therapy shines the spotlight on an individual therapist’s outstanding contributions to the company and to their patients. February’s dynamic physical therapist of the month is Jennifer Rivera, from one of Foothills’ Scottsdale physical therapy locations.
Jennifer Rivera is a physical therapist at the Old Town Scottsdale location, where she is in charge of volunteer and technician coordination, in addition to her PT clients. She grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico and became part of the Foothills Sports Medicine team when she moved to Arizona in October of 2008, after completing her Master and Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Nova Southeastern University in Florida.
Jennifer says her interest in becoming a physical therapist began around the time her brother tore his ACL, MCL and meniscus while playing football. She was in the eighth grade, and says watching his rehabilitation process “sparked” her interest. Jennifer was also an athlete herself, and played volleyball, softball and basketball growing up. Now she enjoys running and hiking, camping, snow and water skiing – pretty much anything outdoors.
Coming from an athletic background, Jennifer is in tune with the concerns of many of her patients. She says the best part of her job is “getting people back to what they love to do, and helping them feel better.”
She loves her career and someday hopes to manage her own clinic. “I love Foothills Sports Medicine, I wouldn’t have stayed [with the company] for so long if I didn’t love it,” she says. Jennifer notes that the environment at the Scottsdale physical therapy clinic is more fun than any other she’s worked at in the past.
For those thinking about pursuing a career in physical therapy, her advice is to gain as much experience as you can through observation and working as a tech, to give yourself a boost. She also advises studying hard in your undergraduate program, and taking the “cheapest route possible,” because you’re exposed to much more when you’re out in the field.
