Baseball is a very popular sport here in the Valley for athletes of all ages. We receive many patients looking for physical therapy in Phoenix after suffering a baseball injury. Although it’s a fun and engaging sport, the rapid and repetitive motions can wreak havoc on the body.  Most injuries are either caused by trauma or overuse. Whether you play baseball competitively or just on the weekend with friends, here are some helpful tips for preventing injuries:

6 Tips to Prevent Injury

  • To avoid heat-related injuries, schedule outdoor baseball games and training in the morning or evening when the temperatures are cooler.
  • When first arriving to the field prior to a game, check the field for anything that could cause harm. Be aware of sprinkler heads, holes in the ground, or uneven surfaces.
  • Once the field has been declared safe, take the time to stretch and warm up with the entire team. Focus on your shoulders, elbows, arms, and legs, and remember that extreme heat can cause these muscles to become fatigued quicker than you might expect.
  • During the game, don’t over pitch or overuse your arms, and make sure to drink plenty of water.
  • While playing, stay aware of pain anywhere in your body. If something begins to hurt or ache, take a break.
  • Have strong communication on the field with other teammates, use the proper feet-first sliding technique, and wear all of the proper safety equipment to prevent trauma.

Baseball may be America’s favorite pastime, but it’s also a common source of pain and athletic injuries. Be aware of your personal limitations while playing, and follow these tips to stay safe on the field.
