Have you ever wondered what it takes to become an AZ physical therapist? Foothills Rehab has you covered for physical therapy in Arizona, but here’s what goes into the making of a physical therapist:
Most physical therapists earn a bachelor’s degree from a four year university with a focus in science-based courses. While a BS is not necessarily required, the post-grad program may have prerequisites in biology, chemistry, anatomy, or physiology. Common undergraduate majors for physical therapists include biology, physiology, and kinesiology.
After earning a bachelor’s degree, physical therapists must obtain a post-graduate professional degree. Some physical therapy programs offer a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree while others offer a Master of Physical Therapy degree. The coursework for both includes anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and neuroscience. Students may need to complete the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) to be accepted to the institute of their choice. The application process for post-graduate programs in physical therapy is highly competitive. To improve their chances of acceptance, candidates gain as much experience as possible through volunteering or working in a physical therapy setting. The next step is to obtain a license to practice physical therapy. Specific license requirements vary from state to state but most require candidates to pass the National Physical Therapy Examination. To practice physical therapy in Arizona, exam takers are allowed 3 attempts per year to pass the national exam in order to become a physical therapist. AZ law also requires a candidate to complete the application process for state licensure and then comply with the state standards of care, ethics, and continuing education requirements as established by the Arizona Board of Physical Therapy.
Only after these steps can a candidate finally call him or herself a physical therapist. Foothills Rehab is proud to have so many trained and licensed Arizona physical therapy professionals.
