PT’s Weigh-in on the 10,000 Steps Per Day Rule

The idea of walking ten thousand steps per day has been popularized as a daily goal for maintaining good health. However, this specific number is not a scientifically established threshold for optimal health. The ten thousand-step goal is somewhat arbitrary and has more to do with marketing and ease of remembering rather than being a precise health recommendation. We asked several Physical Therapists from around the valley for their thoughts, and here’s what we learned.

Physical Therapist Kevin Truitt PT, DPT, CSCS Anthem

“While walking 10,000 steps per day can be a reasonable goal for many people, what’s more important is the overall amount of physical activity and its intensity. As a more scientifically grounded guideline for good health, I recommend meeting or exceeding 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity per week to maintain good health and avoid a sedentary lifestyle. It’s not a one-size-fits-all all.”

Physical Therapist – Jamie Miller, PT, DPT, CKTP Litchfield Park

“Walking 10,000 steps daily can be a useful and convenient way to meet weekly exercise recommendations for some individuals. However, it might not be necessary or sufficient for others, especially if they engage in more intense or varied forms of physical activity. The key is to find a routine you can maintain over the long term that helps you achieve your fitness and health goals. So quality, not necessarily quantity, is a better way to look at it.”

Physical Therapist – Ted Carter, PT, DPT, OCS, COMT, TPS, CSCS Ahwatukee

“The number of steps you should take daily for good health can vary depending on your age, fitness level, and overall health goals. It’s important to note that the 10,000-step guideline is not a one-size-fits-all recommendation. Some people may need more or fewer steps based on their individual circumstances and goals. For weight loss or improving cardiovascular health, you may need more steps. If you are new to exercise or have physical limitations, starting with a lower number of daily steps and gradually increasing can be a more appropriate approach.”

Individual Health Goals Can Vary

It’s important to note that individual health goals and needs can vary, so it’s a good idea to consult a healthcare provider or fitness professional to determine the most suitable exercise plan for your specific circumstances and health objectives.
