What is Kinesio Taping?
You have most likely seen a professional athlete on your favorite sports team or a stranger at your local grocery store with a piece of colored tape on their body. Do you wonder what it is? It is most likely Kinesiology Therapeutic tape or KT Tape for short. KT Tape is a term used to describe an elastic based sports tape with a wave-like pattern on the adhesive side that is typically water-resistant.
Benefits of Kinesio Tape
KT Tape can be used to assist with circulation/lymphatic flow, muscle function, a decrease of pain, and improvement of joint function. Due to KT tape being elastic based it provides for a full range of motion and is less restrictive compared to Prophylactic athletic tape and McConnell taping. These are used primarily to limit/assist movement and bracing/strapping.
Is Kinesio Tape for you?
Although KT tape can be utilized for a wide variety of reasons and diagnoses, it is best to discuss with your physical therapist whether KT tape or another tape option would be beneficial to you. As well as ensure proper application too. If you have any other questions about KT tape do not hesitate to ask your physical therapist.
