Celebrate National Physical Therapy Month

As October comes to an end, let’s reflect on another fantastic National Physical Therapy Month (NPTM). NPTM was designed to recognize the impact that physical therapists and physical therapy assistants make in restoring and improving motion in people’s lives.
In honor of this month let’s take a few minutes to debunk 5 common myths about physical therapy:
Myth 1: You need a referral to see a PT:
Fact: Every state in the US allows patients to be evaluated by a physical therapist without a physician’s referral and all but Michigan allow for some form of treatment without a referral or prescription (Michigan patients will be afforded the same right starting on January 1, 2015).
Myth 2: Physical therapy is only for injuries and accidents:
Fact: Although most people know that physical therapists stretch and strengthen weak muscles after surgery or injury, few people know just how skilled they can be at being able to diagnose and treat potential problems now that may cause more serious injuries in the future.
Myth 3: Any healthcare professional can perform physical therapy:
Fact: The truth is that physical therapy can only be performed by licensed physical therapists. Many PT professionals even expand their studies to specialize in other fields like, neurology, orthopedics, sports, and women’s health.
Myth 4: Surgery is your only option:
Fact: Depending on the injury or problem, physical therapy can often times be just as effective as surgery. Surgery can be very invasive and should be considered as a last resort. Before you consult a surgeon, it is a good idea to get checked out by a licensed physical therapist to see what kind of treatment they recommend.
Myth 5: I can do physical therapy myself:
Fact: Your dedication and participation in a PT program is vital for successful treatment; however, you still need the guidance of a licensed physical therapist. Their extensive knowledge and expertise allows them to make proper diagnosis and treatment plans and to oversee your treatment to ensure proper form and prevent injury.
Physical therapists are trained to help you in any way they can. During your next visit, be sure to thank your physical therapist for all that they do.
