Gift-Wrapping: How To Avoid Injuries & Pain

How to Gift-Wrap Properly

Your tree is up, the halls are decked, and the holiday music is on repeat—it’s the perfect setting for wrapping gifts. While wrapping presents is a cherished tradition, it’s important to remember that repetitive motions and awkward postures can lead to injuries without proper care. Follow Physical Therapist Kacie Lyding’s simple tips to ensure your gift-wrapping marathon is safe and enjoyable.

Gift-Wrapping On The Bed

Wrapping presents on the bed may seem convenient, but the low surface can lead to excessive bending and back strain. One of the best ways to support your back is to stagger your feet and put one knee on the edge of the bed. Your knee is then used to support your body weight, and you don’t have as much strain on the back.

Gift-Wrapping Sitting On The Floor

Avoid wrapping on the floor, as this forces you to bend and reach for extended periods, increasing the risk of back pain and muscle strain.

If you do wrap presents on the floor, stretch your legs first. The hamstrings, hip adductors, and hip rotators (back of the leg, inner thigh, and buttock) are often overstretched and painful after you wrap presents this way.

Sit upright, and do not let your back roll into a “C” position or slump down. And make sure that you keep scissors and tape within reach. At Foothills, we have seen sciatic conditions aggravated by reaching quickly for the scissors just beyond their feet. Keeping items nearby will help prevent this.

Gift-Wrapping: The Best Way

For a pain-free gift-wrapping experience, create an ergonomic wrapping station:

Choose a Well-lit Area

Adequate lighting will help prevent eye strain and allow you to focus on wrapping with precision.

Choose the Right Surface

Find a stable surface at a comfortable height to avoid strain on your back and neck. Ensuring the table you use is high enough that you don’t need to hunch over is the best way to wrap gifts.

Keep Supplies Within Reach

Gather all your wrapping supplies within easy reach to minimize unnecessary stretching and reaching.

Wear Proper Footwear

If you’re standing to wrap gifts, opt for supportive shoes with good arch support to protect your feet and ankles from fatigue: no bare feet or cozy Christmas slippers.

Remember to be mindful when gift wrapping, especially if you have enough gifts to fill up Santa’s sleigh. If you feel sore, tense, or uncomfortable, schedule a Rapid Recovery® Injury Assessment. Happy holidays!
